Schools have built and run small engine test beds to allow study of torque: speed characteristics and fuel consumption. These typically use a small lawn-mower engine but much smaller systems have used model aircraft engines.

In any use of compliant materials (paper, dress and upholstery fabrics, etc) they may burn rapidly if accidentally ignited by a naked flame and the fumes and smoke produced, particularly from synthetic materials, may be an additional hazard.

A variety of different activities have been seen in schools and colleges, where other MRATs may not fit.
